High Risk Pregnancy Flashcards
What is a Biophysical profile (BPP)
test that combines a nonstress test with ultrasound to check the health of the fetus
What is a non stress test
§ measures the fetal heart rate in response to the movements of the fetus
§ checks your baby for signs of stress during uterine contractions
· In a contraction, your baby’s oxygen and blood supply temporarily drop. Most babies can handle this decrease.
· But if your baby’s heart rate stays low after a contraction, it could mean your baby will have problems with typical labor
what is this called?
o Contraction stress test
o Maternal Alpha- fetoprotein is?
· The test checks the baby’s risk for having certain genetic problems and birth defects.
· An AFP test is usually done between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy.
What is AFI and what does it stand for?
Amniotic fluid index
§ An ultrasound examination can diagnose either too little or too much amniotic fluid
§ If the amniotic fluid depth measures less than 5 centimeters, the pregnant woman has oligohydramnios (or polyhydramnios). If fluid levels add up to more than 25 centimeters, she has polyhydramnios.
- Identify maternal variables associated with a diagnosis of a high-risk pregnancy
o Age: < 17/> 34 y.o.
o High parity (> 5)
o Child spacing (< 3 mo)
o HTN/preeclampsia
o Anemia or hx of hemorrhage
o Multiple gestation
o Rh incompatibility
o Hx of dystocia/operative birth
o IPV hx/lack of social support
o Height (< 5 feet)
o Malnutrition (< 15% ideal wt)/extreme obesity (> 20% ideal wt)
- Identify signs and symptoms of potential complications in the first trimester
§ Severe vomiting
§ Chills, fever
§ Dysuria – uti +preterm labor
§ Diarrhea
§ Abdominal cramping - infection
§ Vaginal bleeding – severe headache, flank pain
- Identify signs and symptoms of potential complications in the second & third trimester
§ Persistent, severe vomiting
§ Sudden discharge of fluid from vagina < 37wks
§ Vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain
§ Severe backache/flank pain
§ Change in fetal movements
§ Contractions; pressure; cramping < 37 wks
§ Visual disturbances: blurring/double vision/spots
§ Face/fingers/sacrum swelling
§ Headaches; severe/frequent or continuous
§ Muscular irritability or convulsions
§ Epigastric/Abd pain (heartburn/severe stomachache)
§ Liver is involved
§ Glycosuria, + GTT reaction
§ Gestational diabetes
