Q

Wind blowing into an OPEN roof bulkhead door will cause heat and smoke to flow downward, causing the lower floors and lobbies to be contaminated with smoke (NEGATIVE STACK EFFECT)

A

GENERALLY, wind moving across a roof level will cause LOWER PRESSURE to be created, which can increase positive stack effect inside the stairwell, regardless of which side of the building the wind is impacting or position of the bulkhead on the roof

Q

Stairways , OTHER THAN EVACUATION STAIRS, may be used for venting the fire floor..(controlled by IC..

A

Where only 2 stairways are present , the ATTACK STAIRWAY will be the primary means for vertical ventilation when the MAIN BODY OF FIRE IS KNOCKED DOWN(not controlled, IE: fire apt. )

IC may authorize smoke cleared from a stairway before attack operations were to commence, with positive pressure fans

total of 6 members

however

if there IS FIREMEN SERVICE and no outside ops, OV will be operating elevator, this will reduce amount of FF’s allowed in elevator by ONE ENGINE MEMBER (DOESN’T SPECIFY NOZZLE OR CONTROL)

1. wind impacted--W
2. advanced fire on arrival-A
3. heavy smoke numerous floors-H
4. numerous reports of people trapped -N

Q

Who chooses ATTACK stairway in HRFPMD?

A

engine and ladder officer attack stairway need not be the stairway with a standpipe outlet
(high rise office–ladder officer and stairway MUST have standpipe) (low rise- ladder officer and IC)

once attack stairway is selected, ALL HOSELINES will be stretched and operated from this stairway, NOTIFY 2ND DUE ENGINE AN IC of designation of attack stairway

26
Q

Control FF of 1st engine will complete the connection to standpipe, charged line when ordered, proper water pressure…

A

REMAIN at outlet throughout operation

27
Q

2nd Engine oFFICER..

A
  • communicate with first
  • recognize and request additional assistance from IC, when long and complicated stretches are encountered.

ENSURE siamese is supplied

2nd engine officer must advise IC when their members are assisting the 1st engine advance into IDLH (relief purposes)

28
Q

2nd due engine obtain POST RADIO from …

A

1st arriving BC
-bring it to standpipe outlet where first hose line is being connected and establish communications link on the COMMAND CHANNEL between fire SECTOR AND IC

29
Q

3rd engine responsible for 2nd line..

A

assisted by 4th engine company

  • usually stretched 2 floors below the fire
  • usually need additional lengths of hose
  • 3rd due control FF will remain at outlet
30
Q

2ND LINE may be used for

A
  • back up firs line
  • advance with first line
  • HI RISE NOZZLE OPERATION
  • floor above
  • operate into a breach in adjoining apartment
31
Q

5th Engine..

A
  • -placing HIGH RISE NOZZLE into operation
  • if 5th engine is not equipped with high rise nozzle, CONTACT DISPATCHER and ascertain identity of unit carrying HRN
  • every 10-77 will have atleast one engine equipped with HRN
  • one unit in every battalion has HRN
  • bring HRN, one length of hose per FF and standpipe kit, and report to ICP
  • upon IC’S ORDERS, bring equipment to floor below
  • use hose already place, 2nd hose line, stretch your own line
  • notify fire sector or IC if assistance is needed with stretch or forcible entry
32
Q

CFR engine company (6th?..doesn’t specify)..

A
  • -report to IC and stand with FAST UNIT

- cfrd equipment and FORCIBLE ENTRY TOOLS

33
Q

34
Q

1st ladder …

A
  • recall and gain control of elevators
  • control attack and evacuating stairway doors on the FIRE FLOOR
  • control fire apt. door
  • search and ventilate fire apt.

Officer will control horizontal ventilation of fire apartment

consult with ENGINE OFFICER and select attack stairway

35
Q

If smoke or heat condition exists in public hall…Prior to entering public hall…

A

LCO get report on exterior conditions from members operating on outside and roof operating on floor above
-if this condition is due to wind impacted fire, then remain in stairwell and adjust tactics (wind /addendum 3)

36
Q

If unable to determine smoke or heat in hallway is due to wind driven fire or not…

A

LCO AND ONE MEMBER of forcible entry team shall enter public hallway to LOCATE FIRE APT. AND CONTROL FIRE APT. DOOR

-if NO fireman service–team up with inside team on fire floor

39
Q

OV should include NYC housing authority letters stenciled on outside of building as part of size up…

A

–lettering can change from floor to floor, USUALLY from 1st to 2nd floor, but may vary on upper floors as wells, ESPECIALLY with duplex or sandwich apt…include letter markings in size up to OFFICER

-units may contact LOCAL MANAGEMENT OFFICER, if letters are faded or missing /updated

40
Q

1st due Roof FF

A
  • halligan, hydra ram , KO CURTAIN
  • proceed to apt. above via ATTACK STAIRWAY, (if IDlh, then team up)
  • notify officer of wind conditions : by keeping the apt. door open and opening a window in the room over the fire room, the roof ff will be able to simulate how wind will flow through fire apt.

A

-outside survey with OV
-DELIVER LSR TO FLOOR ABOVE, IF CALLED FOR..notify your officer if you are assisting or continuing to roof
-if NO outside ops or WCD, or LSR..team up with 2nd LCC AND PROCEED TO ROOF
-ensure stairway bulkhead are not vented until main body of fire is knocked down and upon DIRECTION OF IC (elevator machinery bulkhead vented when fire is under control)
-check conditions of hallway of TOP FLOOR AND ALL STAIRWAYS LEADING TO ROOF for smoke and victims
ROOF ACCESS- NEVER take fire service elevator that serves ALL FLOORS
-choose elevator with BLIND SHAFT on fire floor/if no blind shaft proceed 2 floors below and take stairs.

  • maintain evacuation stairway doors closed and initiate search of public hallway on fire floor
  • building occupants opening there apt. doors should be advised to STAY in apt. if tenable
  • -communicate with LCO in fire apt….in most cases , members of first ladder are sufficient to operate in fire apt.
  • -severe heat and smoke condition or high CO are indications of the need to force adjacent apartments–if possible this should be done after the main body of fire has been KNOCKED DOWN
  • AFTER searching the hallway on the fire f–loor, initial search of he attack stairway for 5 FLOORS above fire
