HIGH RISE FIREPROOF Flashcards
MULTIPLE DWELLINGS 75' OR GREATER
Horizontal ventilation of fire apt. should be LIMITED and controlled by…
LCO OPERATING INSIDE FIRE APT.
ALL OTHER VENTILATION LIMITED AND CONTROLLED BY IC
Higher pressure will always travel towards area of lower pressure…
lower pressure areas: open apt. door/open window, ESPECIALLY ON OPPOSITE SIDE OF public hallway from fie apt.
Positive stack effect…UP ..
Negative stack effect..DOWN
What influences stack effect.?
- building height
- temperature differential between outside and inside temps
- air leakage
- WIND
WINDWARD SIDE(high pressure)
Leeward side (low pressure)
Wind blowing into an OPEN roof bulkhead door will cause heat and smoke to flow downward, causing the lower floors and lobbies to be contaminated with smoke (NEGATIVE STACK EFFECT)
GENERALLY, wind moving across a roof level will cause LOWER PRESSURE to be created, which can increase positive stack effect inside the stairwell, regardless of which side of the building the wind is impacting or position of the bulkhead on the roof
An iC SHOULD CONFIRM that ALL HVAC systems are shut down prior to commencing any fire operations..
most commonly in hotels and hallways of up scale high rise
Ventilation for SMOKE removal is usually performed …
AFTER MAIN BODY OF FIRE has been CONTROLLED
LIKE HIGH RISE OFFICER , ventilation of FIRE APT. in HRFPMD should take place …
AFTER MAIN BODY FIRE HAS BEEN CONTROLLED
-fire apt. ventilation by LCO DOES NOT INCLUDE windows in public hallway and stairways (this ventilation is IC controlled )
Stairways , OTHER THAN EVACUATION STAIRS, may be used for venting the fire floor..(controlled by IC..
Where only 2 stairways are present , the ATTACK STAIRWAY will be the primary means for vertical ventilation when the MAIN BODY OF FIRE IS KNOCKED DOWN(not controlled, IE: fire apt. )
IC may authorize smoke cleared from a stairway before attack operations were to commence, with positive pressure fans
Elevator taken ____floors below the fire?
2…..if NO FIREMEN SERVICE, elevator returned to lobby UNSTAFFED.
STAIRS used 7 FLOORS OR BELOW (8 is great)
First alarm ladder company RECALL elevators…
whether or not they are being used
2nd alarm ladder will ensure that elevators are recalled and searched.
-regardless of fire floor, IC must ensure that all elevators are recalled, searched and controlled early in operation
Doors to Elevator Machinery rooms at roof level should not be used for ventilation …
until fire is UNDER CONTROL
Each member and equipment (for elevator load capacity) should be considered G
GREATER tha 275 pounds
BOTH Engine and Ladder arrive together…only ONE ELEVATOR available …(non fire service)
ladder officer/forcible entry team (can/irons)
engine officer/nozzle and control(will ALL ROLL UPS and standpipe kits)
total of 6 members
however
if there IS FIREMEN SERVICE and no outside ops, OV will be operating elevator, this will reduce amount of FF’s allowed in elevator by ONE ENGINE MEMBER (DOESN’T SPECIFY NOZZLE OR CONTROL)
Before operating Firemen service elevator, OV SHOULD…
COMPLETE OUTSIDE SURVEY
-if OV is engaged in outside operations, elevator will be operated by 2nd truck or other member designated by IC
Elevators that open directly into apt or foyers should NOT be used by members..
use service/freight elevator instead, these elevators usually serve all floors
- service /freight elevator should not be used until declared safe by COMPANY OFFICER (not IC)
- Standpipes usually found in service stairway
After all units are in position, and 2 elevators are available and serviceable..maintain one on standby in the LOBBY and one 2 floors below the fire…
this would allow transport of members for relief or injured members/civilians down to lobby
It is NOT usually necessary to force apartment doors on fire floor, OTHER THAN APT. DOOR..
LADDER COMPANIES should report in with CO meters
-if it is decided that an apt. door is going to be forced, it must be on entirely SAME SIDE OF BUILDING as fire apt.
Generally, the only apartment requiring access on the floor above is apartment DIRECTLY over fire apt…no other doors should be forced without sufficient reasons..sufficient reasons are..
- HIGH CO readings at end of hall
- reports of persons needing assistance
- COncENTRATED SMOKE conditions due to stack effect.
Signal 10-77 should be transmitted for fire in high rise building (doesn’t mention 10-75). (75 feet or more in height)..
10-77 should provide sufficient units to initially manage a fire and smoke condition in HRFPMD-some examples 1. wind impacted--W 2. advanced fire on arrival-A 3. heavy smoke numerous floors-H 4. numerous reports of people trapped -N W.A.H.N
FAST UNIT and CFRD ENGINE will be assigned to FIRE SECTOR …when..
fire is ABOVE 6th floor (floor below fire floor)
-at lower floor fire (6th and below) , location will be determined by IC
FAST UNIT shall bring ELEVATOR KEYS
Due to complexity of supplying and stretching from standpipes, first and 2nd engine will ALWAYS operate together.
Initial homeliness from standpipe outlet FLOOR BELOW THE FIRE
Identify of stretches with more than 3 lengths should be entered into CIDS…
variations from stretching initial homeliness from standpipe outlets on a floor below due to building configurations shall be APPROVED BY DIVISION and entered into CIDS
