High Altitude Illness Flashcards

1
Q

What is acclimitization

A

Acclimatization: compensatory response to acute hypobaric hypoxia, improves tissue oxygenation
- varies based on degree of hypoxic stress, individual capacities/factors
- increase ventilation, sympathetic activity, Hgb concentration, vascular endothelial growth factor
- we can’t acclimatize to rapid pressure changes

Q

Describe the etiology of high altitude illness

A

Initial cause = hypobaric hypoxia which leads to relative fluid retention

Prevention = slow ascent
