Haemophilus influenzae type B
Hib is a
gram-neg coccobacillus (polysacc capsule)
Mode of action
resiratory - enters nasopharynx enters bloodstream and causes disease. not common after 5 yrs
clinical features
causes meningitis, pneumonia, arthritis, cellulitis, hearing impairment
Hib Vaccine recommendations
routine in infants and young children
asplenia
recipients of hematopoietic stem cell transplant (3 doses 6 to 12 mo after transplant)
HIB vaccines
three conjugated vaccs:
ActHIB
PedvaxHIB
HIberix
ActHIB and Hiberix:
3-dose primary series (2, 4 and 6 mo) followed by booster (12-15 mos)
PedvaxHIB:
2-dose primary series (2 and 4 mos) followed by booster (12-15 mos)
dose and route
0.5 ml IM
