heterozygous advantage Flashcards
1
Q
what is the heterozygous advantage?
A
Situation where a heterozygous genotype has a higher chance of survival than either homozygous genotype
- type of natural selection
- Having one of these alleles = individuals in malaria prone areas have survival advantage
2
Q
what happens when you are heterozygous? (Dd)
A
- resistant to whatever disease (malaria or TB)
- higher chance of survival
- pass on both alleles = increase in allele frequency = survival right increases
3
Q
what happens when you are homozygous recessive (dd) to a disease?
A
- die before reproductive age
4
Q
what happens when you are homozygous dominant (DD)?
A
- more prone to getting diseases (TB or malaria)
- less likely to reach reproductive age
