receptors + reflexes Flashcards
1
Q
define receptor
A
a structure that is capable to detect a change in the body’s internal or external environment
2
Q
what are the 4 types of receptors?
A
thermoreceptors, osmoreceptors, chemoreceptors, cutaneous receptors
3
Q
what are peripheral thermoreceptors?
A
- respond to heat and cold
- inform the brain of body temp
- monitor core temp in the hypothalamus
- detect blood flowing through the brain
4
Q
what are osmoreceptors?
A
- located in the hypothalamus
- osmotic temp is determined by the concentration of substances dissolved in the water of blood plasma
- higher conc = higher osmotic pressure
- sensitive to very small changes in osmotic pressure
- stimulate hypothalamus > body water content maintained
5
Q
what are chemoreceptors ?
A
- stimulated by particular chemicals
- found in the mouth & nose
- makes us sensitive to body fluid
- involved in the regulation of heart and breathing
- sensitive to the Ph of the blood and to the conc of oxygen + carbon dioxide
6
Q
what are cutaneous receptors?
A
- found in skin
- skin = touch
- pain = stimulated by damage to tissues
