chromosome/block mutations Flashcards
what are chromosome/block mutations?
large scale mutations occurring during meiosis
- involves rearrangement of whole blocks of genes
what is deletion in chromosome mutations?
break at two points and segment falls out and two ends join to form chromosomes deficient of some genes
what is inversion in chromosome mutations?
a middle piece of the chromosome falls out and rotates 180 degrees then rejoins
- no loss of genetic material
- genes are in reverse order
what are the 4 types of mutations in chromosome mutation?
deletion
inversion
translocation
duplication
what is translocation in chromosome mutations?
movement of a group of genes between different chromosomes
what is duplication in chromosome mutations?
a segment is lost from one chromosome and is added to its homologous
what is nondisjunction?
- chromosome mutation
- results in incorrect dividing up of chromosomes to the gametes
- during anaphase of meiosis
= down syndrome
