Herzberg's Motivation Theory Flashcards
What is Herzberg’s Theory?
A two factor theory of motivation: there are motivators (factors that directly motivate people to work harder) and hygiene factors (factors that can demotivate if not present but do not actually make people work harder)
What is the difference between motivators and hygiene factors?
Motivators: directly motivate employees to work harder
Hygiene factors: can demotivate employees if not present but do not make people work harder
Identify three hygiene factors
- Pay
- Working environment
- Relationship with colleagues
Identify two motivators
- Opportunities for promotion
- Job design (enlargement, enrichment, empowerment)
Why is pay not a motivator?
Because employees will not feel valued if they are underpaid, so getting a basic pay and financial rewards don’t motivate employees and just keep them from becoming dissatisfied
