What is Hackman and Oldham’s model?
A business theory which believes that the task taken on by employees is the key to motivation
What are the five characteristics of a well designed job according to Hackman and Oldham?
- Skill variety
- Task identity
- Task significance
- Autonomy
- Feedback
What is skill variety and how does it lead to motivation?
How many different skills / talents the job or task requires: the more variety involved in a job, the higher the likelihood of job satisfaction
What is task identity and how does it lead to motivation?
Whether or not the worker know what the task is and when it’s completed: work becomes more meaningful if the task clear, leading to an increase in job satisfaction
What is task significance and how does it lead to motivation?
Whether or not the task has a substantial impact and is meaningful: the more importance behind a task the more motivated an employee will be
What is autonomy and how does it lead to motivation?
How much freedom an individual has to accomplish their tasks: the more freedom, the more an employee will feel motivated to get the task finished at a high quality
What is job feedback and how does it lead to motivation?
How much an employee is kept in the loop about performance: the more feedback given the more motivated an employee is; negative feedback is constructive, positive feedback makes employees feel satisfied
