Hershey Chapter 8 Flashcards
Three ways parties shape voter turnout
- Getting people the right to vote
- Easier/Accessible Voting
- Greater Voter mobilization
voter mobilization, GOTV
- Parties actively work to get voters to stay in power.
2. GOTV= organized efforts by a political party or campaign to encourage people to vote in an election.
19th Amendment (1920)
- Forbid states to deny the right to vote based on gender
15th Amendment (1865)
- Declared that no state could abridge right to vote due to race
- Failed with Jim Crow laws preventing minority votes in the South
Voting Rights Act (1965), how it addressed discrimination against African Americans
- Enabled the Government to take action against anyone who prevent blacks from voting.
- Supervised/Registered black voters to prevent discrimination
Election Day Registration/Same Day Registration
- Promotes higher voter turnouts
2. Voters either don’t have to register, or can register on the same day as the election
Motor voter laws
- Required states to let citizens register to vote whenever their license was renewed.
- Did not always increase turnout
Early and No-Excuse Absentee Voting
- Early voting allows individuals to vote early in person or through mail for elections before election day
- Poses challenge for parties/candidates in creating a campaign
Why voter ID is widespread/confidential
- Voter ID laws require voters to have an ID issued by the gov’t to vote.
- Attempt to limit voter fraud.
- Targets disadvantaged/minority groups
Problems with counting votes fairly
- Limited polling places
- Problematic voting machines
- Underpaid staff
- Expensive to fund
Factors that Promote More/Less Turnout
- Education- higher/more
- Age- younger/less
- Gender & Race- Low minority voting rates, gender gap not a factor these days
- Social connectedness- being connected with orgs increases odds of voting/participation
- Political Attitudes
What parties do to mobilize voters
- work with orgs to reach out/register potential voters
2. recruit likable candidates to convince people to vote for their platforms
How voter turnout challenges the political parties
- Have to use certain strategies based on the electorate/constitutes
- Does not force them to reach out to find new voters
