Herpes zoster?
While varicella is for children herpes zoster is being common. At the age of 55
Usually occur in person who had chicken pox
Remains latent in sensory ganglia
Rashes heals in 2 weeks
Pain may persist for weeks
Causes of zoster virus?
Inflammation of the nerve (neurotic pain, which leads to skin lesion)
Rash- usually unilateral- single sensory ganglia
Common site of herpes zoster are?
Spinal cord segment T3- L2
Trigeminal nerve- particularly opthalamic branch
Dermatomes?
Area of the skin supplied by sensory fibers of the spinal nerve
Other complications of herpes zoster?
Lower motor neuron paralysis
Meningoencephalitis
Ramsay hunt syndrome- rare
Ramsay hunt syndrome?
Affect the facial nerve by Eruption of the tympanic membrane and external auditory canal
Often a facial palsy
Lab diagnosis are same chicken pox
Treatment- acyclovir $ famiciclovir
