Heredity Flashcards
What are homologous chromosomes?
Contain the same genes, however have a different expression of that gene.
What are Alleles?
Are different expressions of a particular gene. E.g eye colour
What are dominant alleles?
If this allele is present on either homologous chromosomes, its physical appearance will be expressed (masking the other allele)
What are recessive alleles?
This must be present on both homologous chromosomes in order to be physically expressed (otherwise it will be masked by the dominant allele).
What is Sex- linked inheritance?
X-linked traits -Genotypes:
Females (XX)
Males (XY)- Males will only inherit one allele of the x-linked gene.
What is homozygous dominant?
A genotype where an individual inherits two copies of a dominant gene
e.g AA
What is Homozygous recessive?
A genotype where it carries two copies of the same recessive allele.
e.g aa
What is Heterozygous?
having two different alleles of a particular gene or genes.
e.g Aa
