CELL DIVISION 1- MITOSIS Flashcards
What does Replication in cells mean?
In an organism, cells will replicate (increase in number) -> happens through cell division. Before a cell divides DNA replication must occur.
What are the two main types of Replication in Cells?
- Mitosis
- Meiosis
What is the purpose of the replication process?
Ensures that the cell has double the amount of DNA required before the cell enters cell division.
What is the function of Mitosis?
2 daughter cells are produced, genetically identical to the parent cell. It produces somatic cells -> diploid (2n). It contains 2 of each chromosome (1 of 23 from mum and dad)
Why does mitosis occur in humans?
- Growth
- Repair and Healing
- Tissue replacement (from aging cells)
What are the stages of Mitosis?
- Interphase
-Prophase
-Metaphase
-Anaphase
-Telophase
-Cytokinesis
Interphase
Chromosomes aren’t visible
DNA replication is occuring
Prophase
Chromosomes appear
Metaphase
Chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell fibres
Anaphase
Sister chromatids are pulled apart
Telophase
Two new nuclei form around the chromosomes
Cytokinesis
The cells split into 2 new identical daughter cells
