Ju Pi / Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae
Tangerine Peel
Functions:
- Promotes Qi movement and strengthens the Spleen; addresses distention and pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, loss of appetite, and indigestion due to Spleen and Stomach Qi stagnation
- Harmonizes the Stomach and stops vomiting; treats nausea, vomiting, belching, and hiccup due to disharmony of the Stomach
- Dries dampness and transforms phlegm
- Also used for chest Bi syndrome due to phlegm obstruction and Qi stagnation
Qing Pi / Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride
Immature Tangerine Peel
Function:
- Breaks up the Qi stagnation and spreads the Liver; addresses Liver Qi constraint such as distention and pain in the hypochondrium or breast, and hernial pain
- Dissipates (breaks up) clumps and transforms stagnation
- Recently used for raising blood pressure
Da Fu Pi / Pericarpium Arecae
Areca Husk
Functions:
- Promotes Qi movement and reduces distention; directs Qi downward and expands the middle jiao to address resses epigastric and abdominal distention and fullness due to Qi stagnation and dampness obstruction
- Promotes urination and reduces edema (especially superficial edema)
Zhi Shi / Fructus Aurantii Immaturus
Immature Bitter Orange
Functions:
- Breaks up stagnant Qi and reduces accumulation; addresses epigastric or abdominal pain and distention or indigestion with oppression and distention or gas
- Directs the Qi downward and unblocks the bowels; treats food stagnation, constipation, and dysentery due to Stomach and Intestines accumulation
- Transforms phlegm and expels Pi syndrome (distention and fullness); addresses chest Bi due to phlegm obstructing the chest or phlegm-heat accumulating in the chest
- Currently used for treating gastroptosis, prolapse of anus, metroptosis, and hypotension
Zhi Ke / Fructus Aurantii

Functions:

Functions:
- Promotes Qi movement and spreads the Liver; addresses Liver Qi stagnation marked by distention and pain in the hypochondrium, generally with stifling sensation in the chest
- Regulates menstruation and alleviates pain. Commonly used to treat irregular or painful menstruation and PMS due to constrained Liver Qi

- Promotes Qi movement, disperses cold, and alleviates pain; addresses Spleen cold constraint and Qi stagnation marked by distention and pain in the epigastrium and abdomen, reduced appetite, stifling sensation in the chest, and borborygmus
- Warms the Kidney and disperses cold
a. For painful menstruation, lower abdominal distention, and pain in hernial disorder due to cold
b. Used for frequent urination and enuresis due to deficient cold in the Lower Jiao

- Warms the middle jiao and descends rebellion; treats vomiting an dhiccup due to stomach cold
- Grasps the Qi and calms wheezing; treat wheezing and asthma due to Lung and Kidney deficient cold or due to excess above and deficiency below

b. Used for chest Bi syndrome due to cold coagulation and Qi stagnation
c. Recently used for coronary heart disease with angina
Chuan Lian Zi / Fructus Toosendan

Functions:
- Spreads the Liver, clears heat, promotes Qi movement, and alleviates pain; addresses hypochondriac, epigastric, and abdominal distention along with pain, hernial pain, and dysmenorrheal due to Liver Qi constraint transforming into fire and attacking
- Kills parasites and stops pain; addresses abdominal pain due to parasites (roundworm) or accumulation
- Cures tinea infections; used externally for tinea capitis

- Disperses blood stasis and alleviates pain; treats pain due to stasis pattern such as traumatic injury, chest Bi syndrome, and chronic wind-damp Bi syndrome. Also used for incomplete expression of the rash of measles
