Hepatobiliary Flashcards
Fatty Liver Disease
happens when fat builds up in the liver.
too much can cause liver
inflammation, which can damage your liver and create scarring.
may also develop in individuals who drink excessive amounts of alcohol, which is
known as alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD)
Cirrhosis
Scarring (fibrosis), impaired function and eventual failure of the liver
caused by many forms of liver
diseases and conditions, such as hepatitis and chronic alcoholism
Ascites
the buildup of fluid in the abdomen,
Symptoms may include
increased abdominal size, increased weight, abdominal discomfort, and shortness of breath.
May
require an increase in technique
Hepatitis
An inflammatory condition of the liver.
commonly caused by a viral infection, but there are other
possible causes of hepatitis
Cholelithiasis (Gallstones)
(gallstones) that may form in the gallbladder.
Cholelithiasis is
common in the United States population.
Cholecystitis
Swelling and inflammation of the gallbladder
Occurs most commonly because of an obstruction of
the cystic duct by gallstones arising from the gallbladder (cholelithiasis)
Pancreatitis
Inflammation of the pancreas.
when digestive enzymes start digesting the pancreas itself.
Pancreatic Pseudocyst
A circumscribed collection of fluid rich in pancreatic enzymes, blood, and necrotic tissue.
Hepatocellular Adenoma
An uncommon, benign liver tumor.
liver cell adenoma.
extremely rare. It most often affects women and has been linked to the use of birth control pills
Hemangioma
A benign tumor in the liver that is made up of clusters of blood-filled cavities fed by the hepatic artery.
In most cases a liver hemangioma will not grow large enough to cause problems
Hepatocellular Carcinoma (Hepatoma)
The most common type of primary liver cancer.
Hepatocellular carcinoma occurs most often in people
with chronic liver diseases, such as cirrhosis caused by hepatitis B or hepatitis C infection
Metastatic Liver Disease
Cancerous tumors that have spread (metastasized) to the liver from another part of the body.
Hepatic
metastasis are more common than primary malignancies due to liver’s role in filtering the blood
Gallbladder Carcinoma
Cancer that develops in the tissues of the gallbladder.
Signs and symptoms of gallbladder cancer include jaundice, fever, and abdominal
pain. Due to the gallbladder’s size and location, gallbladder cancer is difficult to detect and diagnose
early
Porcelain Gallbladder
Calcification of the inner gallbladder wall believed to be brought on by excessive gallstones,
People with this condition have a higher risk of developing gallbladder
cancer, possibly because both conditions can be related to inflammation
Pancreatic Cancer
Cancer that develops in the tissues of the pancreas.
Smoking and health history can affect the risk of
pancreatic cancer.
Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer include jaundice, pain, and weight loss.
Pneumoperitoneum
The presence of air or gas in the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity.
Often it indicates a
surgical emergency because of visceral perforation in 85 to 95 percent of cases.
Splenomegaly
Splenomegaly is enlargement of the spleen.
Splenic Rupture
occurs when the covering of the spleen breaks open,
pouring blood into your abdominal area.
Depending on the size of the rupture, a large amount of
internal bleeding can occur.
