  • 1512-13, attempted invasion of Gasgony = huge cost, achieved nothing.
  • Treaty of London meant Wolsey had to return Tournai to France.
  • Charles I’s election as Holy Roman Emperor challenged France.
  • In 1523, Wolsey tried to raise money for France war, only £300,000/£800,000 required.

Military Glory

A
  • Successful siege on internationally known city of Tournai, French defeated in battle.
  • King James I of Scotland killed in failed siege on Battle of Flodden Field - early
  • Treaty of Bruges 1521, Wolsey promised Charles to declare war on France if Francis refused to make peace –> Charles invaded Italy instead, which meant losses of £400,000

  • Treaty of London 1518, peace w/ over 20 countries. But overshadowed by Charles I of Spain HRE.
  • New Scottish King (after Battle of Flodden Field) James V only 17 months old, no threat.
  • 1517, Henry left isolated by French + Spanish peace treaty of Noyan 1517.
  • Wolsey unfairly punished Sir Amyas Paulet.
