What were the three main factions?
- Howard.
- Cranmer/ Catholic faction
- Gardiner/Norfolk
Who used Catherine Howard to engineer the fall of Cromwell?
-Norfolk who thought the nobility were natural advisers.
What was the issue with Catherine Howard?
- Catherine had affairs (failed to pretend to love him)
- Henry was told through a sealed envelope.
How did Henry react to the Howard faction?
- Norfolk allowed to withdraw from the courts.
- Catherine Howard beheaded.
Who was Thomas Cranmer and what were the charges attempting to be brought against him?
- Archbishop of Canterbury,
- who allowed the null of Catherine of Aragon’s marriage
- Catholics wanted him arrested as a heretic.
Was the Catholic/Cranmer faction a threat?
- No, Henry warned Cranmer of the plot and gave Henry a ring of trust.
- Crammer ordered to investigate the charges of himself and they were dropped.
What was the result of the Catholic faction?
-Henry enjoyed embarrassing ministers and showing that they were dependent upon his will.
What happened with Catherine Parr in the Catholic faction?
- Sympathised with reformists and she told him she would believe what she wanted.
- Henry didn’t tell opponents of this conversation- they came to arrest her- accused them of treasonous act.
What were Gardiner and Norfolk also involved in?
The plot against Catherine.
What happened in the Gardiner/ Norfolk faction?
- refused to grant some lands to the king
- Earl of surrey claimed he had a claim to throne through Edward I.
- Surrey executed and Norfolk would’ve been too if he had signed the warrant before he died.
- Henry has begun to lose control.
