Patronage
Giving positions of power, land and titles to subjects. Used as a reward for loyalty
For example Thomas Stanley was given control of Lancashire and Cheshire
Order of the garter
Highest honour the king could bestow, 37 were given in total including Bray and Daubeney
Kings council
Only trusted servants gained a place on the kings council, sign they had earned the kings confidence
Great council
Meeting of noblemen called by the king, gathered during emergencies when swift decisions needed to be taken
Acts of attainder
Acts of attainder resulted in families losing the right to inherit land, the acts were reversible based on good behaviour overall 46 out of 138 were reversed
Bonds and recognizances
Written agreements where people agreed to pay a sum of money if they failed to keep their promises/loyalty. Between 1485 and 1509 36 out of 62 noble families gave bonds and recognizances
Feudal dues
Held feudal rights over nobility
King profited from arranged marriages
King received land when land was inherited
Money paid to king to end a ward ship
Retaining
Noble practice of recruiting followers from the gentry for the purpose of administration and for the armies
Crown lands
Henry sought to bring as much land under crown control as possible
Crown lands were five times larger
