Importance of parliament within the Elizabethan political system
Less important to Elizabeth than it had been to Henry VIII
tended to use parliament for law-making, taxation and giving advice
Occasionally useful for raising revenue and legislative purposes

-settlement of region
What happened:
-settlement pushed through due to the efforts of strongly Protestant councillors (Cecil/Cooke/Bacon) in the face of conservative opposition in the House of Lords
Significance:
Legal status of the church and forms of worship were established for the whole of the reign

Reason called:
Elizabeth wanted money
-What happened:
-Large number of MPs urged Elizabeth to marry despite this request infringing royal prerogative
-1563 members of parliament open,y raised the issue
-1566 Elizabeth prevented the passage of bills for further religious reforms favoured by Cecil and many bishops
Significance:
saw difference of opinion between members of parliament and the Queen over an issue she regarded as royal prerogative
April-May 1571
Reason:
Elizabeth wanted money to pay for the suppression of the 1569 rebellion and the council also sought a tightening of the reason law and laws against Catholics
What happened?
Parliament granted Elizabeth a subsidy and was happy to support the tightening of laws against chatolics
William Strickland proposed a law to reform the Common Book of Prayer
Significance:
Strickland annoyed the council which was attempting to reform religion by more subtle means
Council removed his attendance at the commons
