1485: One Year Truce with France
Extended to 1489.
1485-1486: Navigation Acts
Merchants can only export on English ships (50% of crewmen had to be English).
1486: Three Year Truce with Scotland
Scots capture Dunbar and peace treaty signed, with potential marriage alliance
1487: H7 secures agreement with HRE
E4’s treaty renewed for 1 year.
1488: J3 assassinated
J3 dies at Sauchieburn against rebellious nobles. J4 ascends to throne as minor, regency council dominated by anti-English. Margaret, H7’s daughter, marries J4. H7 successfully supports pro-English Earl of Angus.
1489: Treaty of Redon
Breton Crisis: Regent Anne of France wants Anne, daugher of F2 of Brittany to marry C8 so they can gain control, but she is already proposed to Max. French attack, so does HRE + Spain. Treaty of Redon: H7 sends 6k men, paid for by A of Brittany. Treaty of Dordrecht: H7 would send 3k troops + HRE would too, however, HRE backs out + makes peace with C8.
1489: Treaty of MdelC
Arthur to marry C of A with £40k dowry; if either country was at war with France, the other would intervene. Wouldn’t support Warbeck. Important trade clauses, but H7 wasn’t allowed access to New World trade.
1489: Trade treaty with Denmark.
1490: Trade treaty with Norway.
Opened up Iceland and tried to disrupt Hanseatic League’s dominance.
1490: Signs trade treaty with Florence
Establishes staple in Pisa to stop Venice’s dominance of Mediterranean trade + the high taxes imposed on English ships carrying Malmsey wine.
1491: Brittany accepts defeat
C8 marries Anne of Brittany, and France are in control of most of the English Channel now.
Sep 1492: H7 launches French invasion
26k men sent to fight late in season - doesn’t drag out too long. C8 quickly settles for peace: Treaty of Étaples.
Nov 1492: Treaty of Étaples
£159k/50k crowns as French Pension - £5k pa - 5% of royal income. France won’t support any claimants (Warbeck) + would pay arrears of Treaty of Picquigny.
