HEMATOLOGY Flashcards
SEGMENTED NEUTROPHILS
Key identifying features: 2-5 lobes, no visible chromatin in the thinnest filaments. Increased in bacterial infections.
Function: First line of defence against bacteria, function via phagocytosis of bacteria
Increase seen in bacterial infections
BAND NEUTROPHIL
Key identifying features: The indentation of the nucleus is more than 50%, chromatin is seen in the thinnest part.
Same function as neutrophils, they are just the immature form, increases seen in bacterial infection.
EOSINOPHIL
Key identifying features: 2-3 lobes, pink/orange staining granules
Function: Ingest and detoxify foreign protein; help turn off immune reactions; increase with allergies
BASOPHIL
Key identifying features: Dark staining purple to black granules overlapping the nucleus
Function: Contain histamine and other proteins that play a role in an IgE allergic reactions. Also involved in control of parasitic infections.
LYMPHOCYTES
Key identifying features: Round nucleated cells that are slightly larger than RBCs.
Function: Provide antibody and cell-mediated immunity
Increases are seen with viral infections, decreases are seen in immunodeficiency or drug therapy
MONOCYTES
Key identifying features: Blue-grey cytoplasm with brain like convulsions
Functions: Destroy pathogens by phagocytosis; first line of defence in the inflammatory process.
Increased can be seen with disease
NEUTROLPHILIC MYELOCYTE
Key identifying features: Round to oval to one side, flattened side near Golgi body, no indentation
METAMYELOCYTE
Key identifying features: Kidney shaped, indentation is less than 1/2 of the width of the nucleus
RBCS
non nucleated, biconcave discs, 6-8 microns, function to carry oxygen to cell and CO2 away from cells
