Note: Drugs Can Cause Pretty Major Collapse of
Granulocytes
Aplastic anemia
Causal agents: Carbamazepine, Methimazole, NSAIDs,
Benzene, Chloramphenicol, Propylthiouracil
Note: Can’t Make New Blood Cells Properly
Direct Coombspositive
hemolytic
anemia
Causal agents: Penicillin, methylDopa, Cephalosporins
Note: P Diddy Coombs
Drug reaction with
eosinophilia and
systemic symptoms
(DRESS)
Causal agents: Allopurinol, anticonvulsants, antibiotics, sulfa
drugs
Note: DRESS is a potentially fatal delayed hypersensitivity
reaction. Latency period (2–8 weeks)
followed by fever, morbilliform skin rash, and
frequent multiorgan involvement. Treatment:
withdrawal of offending drug, corticosteroids
Gray baby syndrome
Causal agents: Chloramphenicol
Hemolysis in G6PD
deficiency
Causal agents: Isoniazid, Sulfonamides, Dapsone, Primaquine,
Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Nitrofurantoin
Note: Hemolysis IS D PAIN
Megaloblastic anemia
Causal agents: Hydroxyurea, Phenytoin, Methotrexate, Sulfa drugs
Note: You’re having a mega blast with PMS
Thrombocytopenia
Causal agents: Heparin, Vancomycin, Linezolid
Note: Help! Very Low platelets
Thrombotic
complications
Causal agents: Combined oral contraceptives, hormone
replacement therapy, SERMs (eg, tamoxifen,
raloxifene, clomiphene)
Note: Estrogen-mediated side effect
