3 key ideas from “invention of heterosexuality” (Katz)
- sexual identities/labels are relatively recent invention
- sexuality is social constructed in relation to other forces in society (economic, political, medical, legal)
- heterosexuality should not be “invisible” in the study of sexuality
4 principles of social stratification
- trait of society (how organized)
- universal but variable (what kinds/degrees of inequality)
- involves not just inequalities, but believes these inequalities are valid (ppl who benefit from inequality perpetuate norms)
- carries over generationally (inherited wealth)
Weber: parties, power, status groups
parties: organizations that attempt to influence social action and focus on achieving some political goal
power: chance that a person/group can realize its own will in communal action, even against resistance of others
status group: group based on social honour/prestige & has “style of life”
pros and cons of “Fair Trade for All” (Nicki Cole & Keith Brown)
pro:
- reduce inconsistencies in the certification process
- increase consumer awareness about fair trade initiatives
- educate consumers about plight of producers around the world
con:
- supply for fair trade outpaces demand
- mistakenly assumed that all plantations provide same benefits for farmers & cooperatives
