Heat and temperature Flashcards
Heat
form of energy that passes between 2 samples owing to differnce in temperature
temperature
the property of a sample which determines if heat energy will flow to or from another sample of different temperature
specific heat capacity
amount of heat per unit mass required to raise temp by 1 degree C
Triple point
temp at which all 3 phases of water are in equilibrium at 611.73Pa. it occurs at 0.01 degree C
Kelvin
Degree C + 273.15 = kelvin
resistance wire
resistance increases as temp increases
thermistor
resistance of semiconductor falls as temp increases
seeback effect
at junction of 2 dissimilar metals, a voltage is produced in proportion to temp diff between 2 junctions
thermocouple
uses seeback effect, one junction is a known temp to calculate temp at other junction
latent heat
energy required for material to undergo change of phase
specific latent heat of fusion
amount of energy required at temp to convert mass of solid to liquid without a temp change. This amount is released to environment when goes from liquid to solid
specific latent heat of vapourisation
amount of heat required at specific temp to convert unit mass of liquid to a vapour without a temp change
critical temperatuer
temperature at which above the gas cannot turn into a liquid no matter how much pressure applied
isotherm
shows volume pressure relationship of a gas above and below its critical temp. image 11
