flow Flashcards
laminar flow
fluid passes smoothly along path, velocity at centre twice speed of average, velocity at edge nearly zero. described by hagen poiseuille equation. F= (pie.p.R to the 4)/8nl
turbulent flow
flow not parellel to sides of tube, reynolds >2000
Reynolds = (density.velocity.diameter)/viscoscity
bernoulli principle
increased flow velocity of an ideal fluid has proportional decrease in its pressure
venturi effect
when tube narrows, velocity increases so pressure decreases. Keeps total flow the same.Pressure drop can entrain other fluids
Law of conservation of energy
first law of thermodynamics
- if kinetic energy (velocity)increases, potential energy (pressure) decreases - bernoulli principle
Coanda effect
Tendency of stream of fluid flowing in proximiity to convex surface to follow the line of the surface rather than its original course. Means fluid flows down one limb of Y junction
jet entrainment
high speed gas, eg oxygen, will drag air with it due to frictional forces created by fast moving molecues. Total entrained flow due to Bernoulli effect and jet entrainment. Entrainment ratio is entrained air:driving flow
