Heart failure Def. Flashcards
what is Heart failure?
failure of the ventricle to eject blood efficiently (ventricles are contracting)
what results in HF?
fluid volume overloads, chamber dilation (chambers get bigger), elevated intracardiac pressure
what occurs to CO in HF pt?
CO is insufficient
manifestations for HF are?
dyspnea, fatigue, fluid retention, pulmonary edema
what is the survival rate of HF?
5 years
Left heart failure is called?
CHF (congestive heart failure)
right sided heart failure called>
Cor pulmonale
eventually each L or R sided HF becomes?
both L and right
HF with reduced ejection factor?
HFrEF (Heart failure with reduced ejection factor)
(dilated heart)
what is the cause of dysfunction for Systolic HF?
heart can’t pump right
HFpEF (heart failure with preseved ejection factor) is?
HF with preserved ejection fraction
-Diastolic
what is the cause of dysfunction for HRpEF
heart can’t fill correctly (SWOLLEN heart-hypertrophy)
what lab shows HF progress
beta natriuretic peptide (1-200) (released in RA of heart)
beta natriuretic peptide does?
-relaxes blood vessels (lowers bp)
-gets rid of Na+ and H2O
treatment for HF?
replacement
why do people get HF?
Myocardial deficiency (wack contraction)
-increased workload (pressure overload)
-inadequate filling (diastolic)
-volume overload
examples of myocardial deficiency?
MI, CAD, cardiomyopathy (heart swells)
examples of inadequate filling
Atrial fibrillation, infection, tamponade (blood around the heart),
example of increased workload?
pulmonary hypertension?
volume overload example?
Hypervolemia (too much fluid in blood), anemia
left ventricular (left side) HF leads to?
pulmonary edema, coughing, SOB, dyspnea
Right ventricular HF invovles?
systemic cenous congestion, pedal edema, jugular venous distension, ascites (fluid in stomach)
what is systolic dysfunction?
-inadequate ventricular contraction during pumping of the heart
inotropic
+ contraction of heart
