heart failure Flashcards
what is heart failure
Heart failure is a clinical syndrome defined by a failure of the heart to maintain adequate cardiac output as a result of structural of functional impairment of ventricular filling or ejection
how does heart failure usually develop?
slowly
acute failure can be due to?
MI
arrythmia
penumonia
unconotrolled hypertension
what is paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea
coughing and breathlessness at night
what pathological heart sound can you get in heart failure ?
s3
what other heart sound pathology/
displaced apex
bibasal crepitations
causes of right sided heart failure?
secondary to left sided failure
symptoms of right sided heart failure ?
peripheral oedema
ascites
facial engorgement
what is HF REF
heart failure with reduced ejection fraction
what is HF PEF
heart failure with preserved ejection fraction
there are classes of symptom severity. what do these go from?
1-4
1= no limitation
4 = fatigue, sob or palpitations present at rest and all activity
what would be raised in heart failure ?
BNP
what should be carried out if BNP or ECG abnormal ?
echo
what might you see on a chest x ray ?
cardiomegaly pleural effusion kerley b lines alveolar oedema fluid present within lung fissures
when would x ray be normal
in right sided heart failure
