Heart - Circulatory System 3 Flashcards

1
Q

Anatomy of the heart

A
  • lies in thoracic cavity between lungs
  • has a base and apex and lies obliquely
    Organs associated with the heart:
  • diaphragm
  • oesophagus
  • trachea
  • L&R bronchus
  • vertebrae
  • ribs
  • intercostal muscles

Q

Pericardium

A

2 sacs:
- outer sac = consists of fibrous tissue = prevents over distension of heart
- inner sac = double serous membrane = allows smooth movement between layers when heart beats

Q

Myocardium

A
  • composed of specialised cardiac muscle
  • sheet of muscle instead of individual cells
  • impulses spread across whole sheet causing contraction

Q

Endocardium

A
  • flattened epithelial cells- continuous with endothelium lining blood vessels
  • lines chambers and valves of heart
  • smooth membrane = allows smooth flow of blood through heart

Q

Interior of heart

A
  • divided into right and left by septum
  • each side divided into upper chamber and lower ventricle by atrioventricular valves
  • right valve = 3 semilunar cusps
  • left valve = 2 semilunar cusps
  • they ensure blood flows in one direction only
  • valves open and close with changes in blood pressure within chambers

7
Q

2 largest veins

A
  • 2 largest veins - superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava - empty deoxygenated blood into right atrium.
  • travels via right tricuspid atrioventricular valve into right ventricle - from here then pumped into pulmonary artery (only artery to carry deoxygenated blood)

16
Q

Tunica intima

A

Thin endothelial layer of simple squamous cells

17
Q

Tunica media

A

Layer of elastic fibres and smooth muscle

18
Q

Tunica adventitia

A

Outer layer of fibrous connective tissue together with nutrient blood vessels to artery wall

19
Q

Veins vs arteries

A

Veins have:
- thinner walls
- valves - ensure blood flows in 1 direction

20
Q

What blood vessels carry oxygenated blood?

A
  • hepatic artery
  • renal artery
21
Q

Why are superficial veins visible through skin as dark lines

A
  • oxyhaemoglobin is present in oxygenated blood - it’s brought red but becomes darker when oxygen is given up - as has happened to venous blood
22
Q

Approximate volume for blood in the average adult body?

A
  • between 5 and 6 litres of blood
23
Q

Blood is made up of a liquid portion, called ________, and various types of cells

A

Plasma

24
Q

True or false - the liquid portion of blood is roughly 90% water?

A

True
