hollow, muscular, four chambered organ located in the middle of thoracic cavity
between the lungs in the space called the mediastinum
HEART
2 CARDIAC CYCLE
DIASTOLE - (relaxation of ventricles; filling)
SYSTOLE - (contraction of ventricles; emptying)
Right side pumps blood to the lungs for gas exchange (pulmonary circulation) while left side
pumps blood to all other parts of the body (systemic circulation)
R-P
L-S
Swooshing or blowing sound
Murmurs (Turbulence)
Heavy tight pressing pain;, discomfort happens with or without exertion; chest
and radiates to shoulder, jaw, neck and upper abdomen; last x 20mins; moderate to
severe; Rest does not relieve the pain; May occur with nausea, vomiting, weakness
and sweating

best to assess amplitude and contour of the pulse wave
CAROTID
Need many hour of practice in the
auscultation of the heart

AUSCULTATION
Internal-Deep and medial to sternocleidomastoid
external-superficial, lateral to sternocleidomastoid
Returns blood to the heart from head and neck by way of the SVC
JUGULAR VEINS
Tight heavy pain, Discomfort occurring during exertion. At the chest and
radiates to shoulder, jaw, neck and upper abdomen; last x 20mins; Mild to
moderate type; Relieved by nitroglycerine; May occur with DOB, nausea or
sweating
ANGINA
Sharp, stabbing pain with pounding feeling; pain is continuous
ongoing; pain radiates to neck and shoulders; severe type of pain; aggravated by
breathing position changes, coughing and maybe relieved by sitting forward; Seen
with fever, weakness, tiredness, coughing, trouble breathing and or pain when
swallowing
