Heart Flashcards
where is the heart located?
behind the sternum
how many chambers are in the internal structure of the heart?
4
what are the 4 chambers found in the heart
right atrium
left atrium
(superior atria, low-pressure areas)
right ventricle
left ventricle
(inferior ventricles, high-pressure areas)
what are the two valves that separate the chambers and which sides are they located in? (alongside the one valve between the ventricles and the one next to it)
bicuspid (left side)
tricuspid (right side)
semilunar valves (center)
aortic valve (between the left ventricle and aorta)
what supplies the heart muscle with blood carrying nutrients and oxygen
coronary arteries
right atrium function
receives deoxygenated blood (low in oxygen high in CO2) returning from superior and inferior vena cava.
(blood is obtained from the atrioventricular valve/bicuspid)
atrioventricular valves (bicuspid) function
prevents blood from flowing back into the atrium from the ventricle
right ventricle function
receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the lungs via the pulmonary trunk and arteries
left atrium function
receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins
semi-lunar valves
has cusps (flaps) which open in one direction in order to prevent backflow of blood from blood vessel into ventricle
aorta function
carries oxygenated blood to the systemic system
septum
a muscular wall which separates the ventricles
alright, so here’s how the heart pumps blood to the lungs (pulmonary circulation loop)
right ventricle —> semi-lunar valve —> pulmonary trunk —> right/left pulmonary arteries —> lungs (in which it picks up oxygen from capillaries) —> (back to the heart) right/left pulmonary veins —> left atrium —> bicuspid valve —> left ventricle
how is blood pressure measured?
systolic blood pressure

diastolic blood pressure
alright, so this how the oxygenated blood travels to the rest of your body (systemic loop)
left ventricle —> aortic semilunar valves —> aorta —> rest of the body —> both the superior and inferior vena cava —> right atrium —> tricuspid valve —> right ventricle
