What is the metabolic rate?
The rate at which the metabolism ( reactions that use energy to keep us alive ) occurs.
What are the factors that effect the metabolic rate?
> muscle to fat ratio (muscle requires more energy)
> size ( larger means more cells and so more energy is needed)
> gender
> how much exercise your do
What can eating too much carbohydrates and fat result in?
> obesity, which can cause:
- arthritis, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease
How does obesity occur?
> the amount of energy taken in is more than the energy needed by the body , so more energy is stored as subcutaneous fat and the person gains weight.
What components do you need for a balanced diet?
> fats: to keep warm and release energy
carbohydrates: to release energy
proteins : for growth and cell repair and replacement
fibre : to keep everything moving in your digestive tract
minerals and ions
