Police has primary duty of care for employees, contractors, 3rd parties, others (detainees/public) put at risk by our work.
What does “Reasonably Practicable” mean.
2 parts
Must do what is Reasonable Practicable to ensure h&s of self and others.
First - consider whats ‘Possible’ to ensure h&s
Second - what is ‘Reasonable’ to do in circ’s.
Control Measure - Hierarchy of Controls
Elimination - Most effective Substitution Engineering Admin PPE - Least effective
What must I do (as employer)
H&S induction
Employee access to HSR’s (Health & Safety Reps)
Report & review H&S incidents and Near Misses using My Police.
What is a Near Miss
Unplanned or unexpected event at work that could have resulted in harm, includes ‘loss only” where no injury occurred.
Must be reviewed by supervisor. Not a blame game
When to notify WorkSafe
- Hospitalised (getting a bed)
- Serious head injury
- loss of Consciousness
(Certain Near miss events with potential for death/serious injury)
Exemption - NZDF on active duty, SIS/GCSB
H&S Risk Management example :
Op for crowd control at protest march for firearms laws
Use Risk Assesment and Risk Matrix
Violence - PITT, TENR, Area Prevention teams.
Fatigue - Monitor staff, Safety officer, Fatigue awareness for staff
Sun stroke/Dehy - sunscreen, hats, water
