What is the Considerate Constructors Scheme?
It is a non profit independent organisation founded in 1997. It was formed to improve the image of the construction industry. It encourages best practices procedures.
Explain your understanding of Health & Safety Executive? (HSE)
It is the UK National Authority for manging world related H&S procedures and sickness issues.
They act in the public interest to reduce work related injuries and illnesses.
They also support businesses to change or adapt in order to remain compliant with H&S procedures.
What incidents cause the most fatalities in construction?
Falls from height.
What is the biggest cause of long term health issues in construction?
Breathing in hazardous dust or fumes.
What does Beaufort Scale measure?
This is used to measure windspeed which is important when working at height.
When are visitors most likely to have an accident on a construction site?
When they first arrive on site.
What should you do first if you find an injured person on site?
Access the situation
Call the emergency services if the issue is serious
Raise the alarm to alert everyone on site.
When did the RICS Surverying Safely 2nd edition guidance note come into effect?
It replaced the 1st edition in February 2019 but was made in November 2018.
What are the key changes from the 1st edition?
- RICS have introduced the ‘safe person’ concept. - when each individual assumes behavioural responsibility for their own, colleagues, and other’s H&S at work.
- There is greater emphasis on ensuring the competence of individuals and their responsibility to ensure the use of safe work equipment and systems.
- RICS regulated firms must ensure they provide a safe working environment, safe work equipment, safe systems at work, and competent staff.
What is the H&S act 1974?
- The key legislation relating to H&S in the UK.
- It places a duty on employers to ensure that H&S of employees and other affected persons is not at risk.
- A key aspect: A director/Senior Manager commits an offences if the company’s H&S breach was committed with their consent.
- Breaching the ACT is a criminal offense - it can carry an unlimited fine or 2 years in prison. Depending on severity, manslaughter can carry up to 15 years.
What are the corporate requirements?
- Appropriate line management structure to monitor and manage H&S.
- Clear accountability, policies and procedures.

- Carefully examining what in your work could cause harm to others, so that I can judge whether or not I have taken enough precautions to precent harm.
