Define formal regulation vs relationship of governance
Formal regulation
-A top down approach
- Formal enforcement strategy in order to improve public health
- Such as mandatory seat belts
Governance
-Complex system of the interactions of the institutions of state, government and citizens
- Collectively seeking to assure conditions under which the population can live with the highest possible level of health and wellbeing
- Hinges on the interplay between the rights and responsibilities of such players out side formal systems
Aims of governance in public health
Aims to appeal to the individuals responsibility as a citizen to make healthy choices and reduce exposures to health risks to limit wider costs
Health promotion policy in the UK recognises that there are health risks that are beyond a individual control, therefore the government has responsibility to ensure measures are in place to protest peoples health (e.g. making environment safer, creating green spaces, cycle paths)
