Kwashiorkor VS. marasmus
Kawashiorkor:
• edema, big belly, hair bleached blonde
• not enough protein= not enough albumen
Marasmus:
• protein deficiency& malnutrition
• skin & bones, completely lose hair, bald
Food allergies
Egg, milk, fish, coconut, sesame, shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts
Most children grow out of milk/egg allergies by 3-4
Cow milk
Occurs by 3 months of age. >7% allergic
Excessive crying
Eczema
Diarrhea
Blood in stool. Anyone less than 3 months old with bloody stool= ER
Oral allergy syndrome
Localized allergic reaction
- fresh fruit, raw veggies, but spices
- if you cook the food. You denature the proteins and it’s okay to eat.

Feeding issues
To help stop regurgitation, sit them up for 30 min after feeding
Throwing up isn’t bad unless painful, causing sleep loss, vomiting way more than a mouthful
- the sphincter between esophagus and stomach doesn’t develop until 4 months
Colic
Crying >3 hrs per day
• could happen from over stimulation during the day
• early evening hours
• resolves by 12 weeks of age
• respond to their crying
• babies do better when swaddled
• if baby is regurgitating a lot, foot ball hold
Failure to Thrive (FTT)
Weight <5%
Organic FTT
• due to physical cause
• heart defects, cystic fibrosis, GERD
Non- Organic FTT
• psychological factors
- mom/dad with PP blues, constantly crying during feedings
• parental knowledge
- feed little babies on demand!! No schedules!
SIDS
Theory:
Brain stem abnormality
•positive factors:
- back to sleep
- pacifier, fan, cool room all make you breathe
• signs of SIDS - diaper wet or solid - hands clenched (primitive sign) - frothy fluid from mouth/nose - bed looks disheveled - rolled over on face • usually found by mom or babysitter during nap time
