Health, Preformance and Risk Flashcards
Risk Perceptions
something is at stake and we assume is valuable, with an uncertain outcome
assumed that maintaining health is the goal and they are a rational thinker
Sport Benefits
improves health and well-being, extend life expectancy, reduce likelihood of non-communicable disease, good habits start early, and allows play and self-expression
Athlete Experience
overuse injuries overtraining/burnout exploitation eating disorders academic sacrifices sexual abuse maltreatment
Concussion
traumatic brain injury resulting from biomechanical forces transmitted directly to indirectly to the head followed by temporary neurological dysfunction
rapid onset
injury to body that shakes the noggin
neuropathological changes to adapt to it
Microstructural Damage
energy crisis, migraines/headaches, photosensitivity, impaired cognition, processing and reaction time, can cause chronic presentations
protease activation
altered cytoskeletal proteins
cell death in brain
Symptomatic and Exercise Progression
decreased HR variability, no salivary cortisol, poor mood, increased perceived stress and decreased quality of sleep
Concussion Prevention in Concussion Crisis
lots of more concussions causes this
primary is equipment, rule change, etc.
secondary is policy and education
tertiary is return to play guidelines
Return to Play Guidelines
symptoms limited activity, light cognitive activity, half day of work/school, full day of work/school, return to physical activity, noncontact training, medical clearance, full practice and then game play
Underreporting
actions of players and coaches who ignore or circumvent messages or protocols relating to concussions that can be seen poorly by ignorant or ill-informed colleagues or teammates
