Steps in planning a health inquiry – what is involved in each step?
Planning- identification and description of a health issue, development of focus question to research.
Locating and selecting – identification and use of reliable information and sources, identifying and applying criteria
Interpreting- summery of information, identification of trends and patterns in data, developing and argument, developing general conclusions
Presenting- presentation of findings in appropriate format to suit audience
Criteria for selecting sources of information.
- Locating sources- books, internet, media, interpersonal
- Reliability and relevance of sources - recency, reputation, qualifications, bias, values, consistence, confirmation, witness or researcher
- Multiple sources
What is reliability?
Authentic, conforming to fact and therefore worthy of belief, showing whether research methods can reproduce the same results multiple times.
What is validity?
How well the results among the study participants represent true findings among similar individuals outside the study
Interpretation of information – patterns
The occurrence of health-related events by time, place and personal characteristics.
Interpretation of information – trends
Trends generally occurs over time and a relationship can be over time or at a specific point in time.
Interpretation of information – summarizing data.
Read the text carefully, make a vocabulary list, key words, condense, attitude, re-phrase.
