INDIGENOUS HEALTH
- health outcomes partly shaped by social class
- lower life expectancy
- access to quality food sources
- access to clean water
- adequate living conditions
- access to education
THE ‘THRIFTY GENE’
Proposed that Indigenous peoples were genetically predisposed to Type 2 Diabetes due to the foodways (eating habits) of their ancestors
THE SOCIAL MODEL OF DISABILITY
- a tool to provide insights into the disabling tendencies of modern society to generate policies and practices to facilitate their eradication
Impairment
any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or function
Disability
any restriction or lack (resulting from an impairment) of ability to perform an activity in the manner or within the range considered normal for a human being
Handicap
a disadvantage for a given individual, resulting from an impairment or disability, that limits or prevents the fulfilment of a role
