Risk assessment determines possible mishaps, their likelihood and consequences, and the tolerances for such events.

Is a risk assessment a legal requirement?

It is a legal requirement for organisations more than 5 staff to carry out documented health and safety risk assessments of all their significant hazards. Outline:
1. Identify the hazards
2. Identify the people at risk from the hazard
3. Evaluate the risk, considering the likelihood and severity of any accidents. Existing precautions should be identified and evaluated
4. Record the findings on a suitable form
5. Review the risk assessment regularly
6. Advise all those affected of the outcome of the risk assessment and methods of work and precautions to minimise or eliminate risk.

• Done at your desk using the information you have available to you to identify the risks. Noting these down in Allsop risk assessment template.
• Hazards including, industrial site with vehicles operating, manufacturing units with potential oil spills.

• Done before entering the property and after briefing by party showing us around. Again reviewed hazards and people impacted, consulted this with my colleague before we entered. I recognised that we had brought the appropriate PPE to undertake the inspection.

I took with me a hard hat, steel capped boots and high vis, I was also provided with ear plugs on arrival.
