  • Some countries have it implemented into their constitution such as Iraq

Tuberculosis

  • TB contagious infection associated with overcroweding and poverty.
  • Since development of vaccines in 1950’s, TB mortality rates have declined
  • 1193 WHO declared TB as a global emergency, and tackling TB was one of the MDG’s
  • In 2014 , 9.86 million were ill with TB, with 1.5 million dying, largest cause of death among those who had HIV/AIDs.
  • Between 200 and 2014 estimated 43 million lives saved through diagnosis and treatment.

UN Declaration on Human Rights

A

• Created in 1948, set out fundamentals of human rights.
• Contains 30 articles specifying these rights.
• International bill of Human rights for basis of International alw.
• Since start of 21st century, increase in number of authoritarian countries
• Not all countries have signed UDHR, E.G. Saudi Arabia doesn’t agree on religious freedom.
• Western countries undertake military operations where they have been violated.
The US and EU have condemned human rights violations in a number of countries, such as Syria. Russia and China.

European Convention on Human Rights

  • Formulated by the council of Europe, based on the UDHR in 1950, ratified by UK in 1951.
  • 47 signatory countries, purpose to achieve greater unity
  • 59 articles and various protocols
  • Some see it as undermining national sovereignty.
  • Pending cases at the European Court of Human rights, as of May 2016 include Ukraine with highest percentage of 22%, Russia second with 13.23 AND Turkey Third with 12.1%.

• American Indians and Alaskan natives comprise about 2% of US population. 78% of those living outside tribal territories.
• Health and education of recognised tribes is provided through IHS, provides care for about 2 million
• Found to be underfunded, problems with sterilisation equipment, errors in medical records and unqualified medical staff, less than half of indeginous people have medical insurance, thus access to healthcare is restricted.
• In terms of educational attainment 2012 performance at all levels was about 10% lower than US white population.

• 2016 budget proposed $20.8 billion for indeginous programmes, 1.5 billion increase from previous year.

• Jordan has significant Human rights issues.
• Accepted many refugees from Syria, Refused entry to all Palestinian refugees escaping from Syria
• Narrowed scope of judicial courts and broadened anti-terrorism laws to threaten freedom of speech.
• 9 news websites shut down in 2014
• Torture not recognised by judicial system.
• 2014 US renewed Aid package, which will provide US$360 million in economic assistance. US$300 million in foreign military financing.
• EU also pledged $298 million to help Jordan with the refugee crisis.
2015 Jordan received over 5% of US foreign military finances.

  • 2014 Iraq, IS forced Yazidi to flee to Sinjar Mountains, after repercussions of abduction or death if they haven’t converted to Islam or listening to IS orders.
  • US considered acts by IS Genocide.
  • US & others regarded direct military action as justified and began air strikes.
  • 50,000 Yazidis escape from IS and make their way to Syria where they were protected by Kurdish Forces.
  • Considered successful, military personnel visited mountains and arranged Humanitarian aid drops of food and water, sufficient as military threat had been greatly reduced.

A

Ebola is a virus disease transmitted from infected wild animals to people, and then from human to human via direct contact with bodily fluids.

  • Mortality rates are usually around 50%.
  • WHO estimates over 28,600 people were infected and 11,300 died.
  • in first year of response MSF (an NGO) were there immediately offering medical assistance, setting up 15 Ebola management and transit centres, dealing with 8,534 patients
  • MSF shipped 1400 tonnes of equipment, with 530,000 protective suits for health workers.
  • EU hosted conferences discussing the lessons to learn from Ebola outbreak
  • WHO aims to prevent further outbreaks through surveillance in at risk African countries, helping with laboratory testing, advice and training, and engaging communities.

  • North felt excluded, led to armed rebellion in 2002, led to their right to vote.

  • Shootings and mortar attacks took place in broad daylight
  • Convinced UN human rights violations, intervention needed.
  • During Conflict in 2011, million people displaced from their homes and 147,000 refugees fled to Liberia.
  • Battle lasted 12 days, killing 3,000 people, ended when UN security council authorised French forces to intervene
  • Attacked Gbagbo’s base and main force defences.
  • Gbagbo supporters eventually surrendered.
  • Within two months was peaceful.
  • UN agencies brought in humanitarian aid for refugees
  • New govt. pledged to investigate human rights abuses
  • 2016 UN mission winding down, development objective of country was to become an emerging economy by 2020
  • Average income rate 9% increase from 2011

The Srebrenica Massacre

A
  • Bosnian war 1992-1995, breakup of Yugoslavia, ethnic conflict between Muslims and Serbs
  • UN declared Srebrenica a safe area.
  • AID convoys allowed through if Weaponry was given up
  • AID convoys eventually allowed through, Serb forces restricted their contents
  • Dutch UN peacekeeping force put in place, reinforcements not allowed to go through.
  • Minority of Muslims attacking Serbs for supplies escalated the situation
  • July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces moved into the town and took over 8,000 Muslim men and boys and systematically executed them
  • Worst massacre in Europe since the second World War
  • Perpetrators convicted for crimes at international tribunal, UN forces criticised for covering up.
  • In July 2015, UN tried to pass a resolution designating the massacre as genocide, Russia used Veto to block this, resolution only identified Serbs it would increase ethnic tensions
