Holmes and Rahe stress scale
43 items
Scale to access stress
gives values to different stressful events
Stress
Physiological, cognitive, emotional and behavioural response to stimuli that prevents goals and potentially life threatening
Stressors
event or circumstances that cause stress
not all desirable
Basis of stress
Walter Cannon
flight or fight
physiological reaction to dangerous situations
source of stress
approach-approach: Stuck between two desirable choices
approach-avoidance: one desirable and one undesirable outcome
avoidance-avoidance:both outcomes are undesirable
Selye general adaption syndrome
1: Alarm-reaction
2: resistance-continued exposure, adaptation:benefits from energy reserves
3: exhaustion-physiological resources are depleted
Criticisms of general adaption syndrome
1) little consideration of physiological factors>apprasial
2) responses to stress are uniform
3) stress is assessed as an outcome
Cognitive appraisal
Laszarus-stages
hardiness and perceived control
reactions/interpretation also affects stress
stage 1: evaluation of threat. if its real go onto stage 2
2: determination if sufficient resources available to cope with stress
hardiness: some view stress as a challenge
perceived control: situations that allow some control>less stress
Social support
the help we recieve from others can be helpful for stress because we can learn how others coped and learn encouragement and incentives
brown et al
compared social contact, social support and giving social support
>pt’s eldery couples
>time 1: how much support they give/receive, how much support given/received from spouse, assessment of control varables
time 2: 5 years later mortality
results: receiving instrumental social support increased odds of mortality
giving:decreased odds of mortality
