Head Injury (Meninges) Flashcards
Characteristics of extradural hemorrhage:
1_Site: temporoparietal area (hinge fracture)
2_Due to rupture of middle meningeal artery
3_Mainly associated with fracture (85%)
Three types of intracranial hemorrhage:
Extradural
Subdrual
Subarachnoid
What is the Lucid interval:
It is a temporary period of consciousness and seeming recovery that follows a period of unconsciousness.
Or
It’s the period of consciousness between two unconsciousness:
1. The fist is due to the trauma.
2. And the second is due to compression.
Write short notes about subdural hemorrhage:
Mainly venous
It is not necessary to be related to fractures.
May occurs with diatasis of sutur
Due to sliding of emmisary veins
Chronic subdural hemorrhage can be misdiagnosed as a:
Stroke (CVA)
Chronic subdural hemorrhage (hematoma) may be caused by:
Repeated trauma
Ex: hypoglycemia, hypotension, drunk person or seizure.
Most dangerous intracranial hemorrhage type:
Subarachnoid
Why is subarachnoid hemorrhage more dangerous than other types:
- Because it takes the entire brain and not one place like the rest (in the doctor’s words)
- Also because it’s mainly arterial (rapidly progressive).
Mechanism of pathological type of subatachnoid :
Rupture of Berry aneurysm in the circle of willis cause bleeding and sudden death
One of causes of sudden death in the middle age:
Subarachnoid hemorrhage (pathological)
Medicolegal importance of meningeal hemorrhage;
Lucid interval
If there is a big quantity, it may show signs of compression and ++ICP : seizure, projectile vomiting, unconscious, and death.
You can take a sample to measure CO level to confirm:
Heat hematoma (++CO)
