Head and neck embryology Flashcards
What is mesenchyme?
embryonic connective tissue
What does the neck develop from?
branchial/pharyngeal arches
What does the face develop from?
5 mesenchymal processes/prominences
What does the skull develop from?
mesenchyme in the head
How many branchial arches are there?
5
1,2,3,4,6
What are the branchial arches?
Series of arches which develop around the future mouth and pharynx to offer support to the primitive pharynx
What week does the branchial arches form?
late week 4 - week 6
What forms the clefts and what forms the pouches inbetween arches?
clefts - ectoderm
pouches - endoderm
What does the mesoderm form in the branchial arches?
cartilage, muscles
Nerves of branchial arches number sequence to remember
5,7,9,10,10
1st arch nerve supply
mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve
2nd arch nerve supply
facial nerve
3rd arch nerve supply
glossopharyngeal nerve
4th arch nerve supply
superior laryngeal branch of vagus
6th arch nerve supply
recurrent laryngeal branch of vagus
What branch have all the muscles of facial expression derived?
2nd
Digastric - anterior and posterior belly nerve supply and arch derivation
anterior - V3
posterior - facial nerve
arch 1 and 2
What group of muscles must arise from branchial arch 1?
muscles of mastication
What skeletal elements form from the branchial arches?
hyoid bone, incus, malleus, mandible etc
Other important structures developing from branchial arches
thyroid and parathyroid glands, part of pituitary gland and tongue
Name the 5 processes/prominences which form the face
1 frontonasal
2 maxillary
2 mandibular
What clinical importance is it to know the 5 processes of facial development?
congenital defects = clefts
Placode
thickening
What makes the primary and secondary palate?
median nasal processes forming philtrum
palatine shelves from maxillary process meet
What is the importance of the palate?
separate nasal and oral cavity
What is the cranial vault and how is it formed?
flat bones of skull joined by sutures
membranous ossification
not joined at birth
Craniosynotosis…
sutures joined much earlier than they should be
Base of skull formation
endochondral - preformed in cartilage and then later ossified as irregular bones
What is the viscerocranium formed from?
brachial arches and sensory capsules
What are sensory capsules and how are they formed?
form bones around sense organs
preform in cartilage
