What is a manager?
Person responsible for the work of others → overseeing work
combine human resources and material resources (raw material or information) to produce goods and services
they must find ways to get the best performances without doing a lot of work
What is management? What does it have to do with people centered practices?
- Process of working with and through others to make sure things are effective, efficiently and ethically
- Research suggests that people-centered practices have higher profits and lower employee turnover

- Help others experience satisfaction in their work
How do you know if organization is doing well performance wise?
Organizations perform well when resources are used efficiently and customers are served well → enjoying the service

indicator of quality of human experiences in workplace - like fair pay, safe working conditions, opportunities to learn and use new skills, and room to grow and progress in different careers

What is job performance?
The equation: performance = ability x support x effort
What is primary effect?
tendency to form opinions about others based on first impression -> may not be reliable

What is fundamental error?
An inclination to over attribute others’ behavior to internal causes (dispositional factors) and discount the situationals factors contributing to their behavior (ignore the reason why someone is late for instance)
What is self-serving bias?
Tendency to claim success is due to our efforts, while failure is due to circumstances beyond our control
What is managing the perception process?
- Seek information from various sources to confirm or rebut your impression of a situation → like background checks
- By empathetic - try to see a situation as perceived by others
- Avoid the common perceptual distortions - avoid stereotyping, halo effect and selective perception
- Avoid inappropriate attributions - don’t be too hasty, try establish real reasons why things happened
What is managing the perception process?
The perceiver:
a) When an individual looks at a target and try to interpret what he or she sees that interpretation is influenced by personal characteristics (attitudes, interest, past experiences)
The target:
a) Characteristics of what we’re observing alter our perceptions (loud people, bad attitudes are more likely to be noticed)
The situation:
a) The context in which we see objects or events is also important because our environment influences our perception
What is managerial implications?
Hiring - interviews make hiring decisions based on their impression of how an applicant fits the perceived requirements of a job
Performance appraisal - faulty perceptions about what constitutes good versus poor performance can lead to inaccurate performance appraisals, which erode work motivation, commitment, and loyalty
Communication - social perception is a screening process that can distort communication, both coming and going
compare the results to the action standard, and indicate what action—or even non-action—should be taken in response.
