Haploid and Diploid Cells Flashcards
Define a haploid cell
A cell which has one set of chromosomes i.e. it has only one of each type of chromosome in the nucleus
Define a diploid cell
A cell which has two sets of chromosomes i.e. it has two of each type of chromosome in the nucleus
What is haploid symbolised by?
The letter ‘n’
In a haploid cell what are the number of chromosomes given as?
N=2
N=3
Name two human cells that are haploid?
Eggs and sperm
How many chromosomes do eggs and sperm contain?
They both contain 23 chromosomes
What is diploid symbolised as?
2n
In a diploid cell what is the total number of chromosomes in the cell is given as?
2n=4
2n=6
What is the diploid number for humans?
46
2n=46
What does it mean if a human cell has 2n=46 chromosomes?
It means 23 of the chromosomes were obtained from the person’s mother and the other 23 were obtained from the father
In diploid cells how are the chromosomes found?
The are found in pairs
Define a homologous pair
A pair of chromosomes of similar size with the same sequence of genes.
In a homologous pair, where do the two different chromosomes come from?
One from the mother
One form the father
