Haole koa 40% Flashcards
What is haole koa? taxonomy, invasive?
invasive plant species in arid parts of HI, look like pea pods= Leucana leucocephala
Toxic principle (haole koa)
Leaves and seeds contain glucoside mimosine it inhibits DNA synthesis, reduced thyroid function= goiter (depresses uptake of iodine), infertility.
Pathophysiology of toxins (haole koa)
Ingestion of large amounts of haole koa occurs most often in times of draught> ruminants can degrade toxins, can slowly intro to sheep/ goats to develop tolerance, can add iron salts to reduce toxicity + soak in water or drying to reduce toxic effects.
Clinical signs (haole koa)
primarily causes hair loss> horses and young cattle +/- horizontal cracked hooves.
Treatment (haole koa)
Eliminate or reduce exposure, alternative forages, slow intro to reduce risk of clinical signs.
