5 Moments of Hand Hygiene

- Before touching patient
- Before clean or aseptic procedure
- After body fluid exposure risk

Handwashing Technique
A
- Turn on water and adjust force
- Wet hands and wrist area. Keep hands lower that elbows to allow water to flow down
- Use 1 tsp soap. Cover all areas of hands
- Firm rubbing and circular motions wash palms, back of hands, finger, area b/w finger, knuckles, wrist, forearms
- Continue friction rubbing for 20 seconds
- Rinse with water running towards fingertips.
- Grab papertowel and dab hands dry
- Grab new papertowel to turn off faucet

When to use hand sanitizer
A
- Hands not visibly soiled (blood or body fluids)
- Before inserting urinary catheters, peripheral vascular catheters, or invasive devices that do not require surgical placement
- Before donning sterile gloves prior to invasive procedure
- Moving from contaminated to clean body site
- Before and after patient contact, patient surfaces
- After removing gloves
