Hand and Wrist Flashcards
Name the bones of the hand
"Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can't Handle" lateral to medial proximal row: scaphoid lunate triquetrum pisiform
distal row: trapezium trapezoid capitate hamate
normal AROM values
wrist flexion: 80
wrist ext: 70
radial deviation: 15
ulnar deviation: 45
end feel: tissue stretch
what is the carpal tunnel?
a passage for flexor tendons of fingers and median N, deep to flexor retinaculum
4 tendons for FDS
4 tendons for FDP
1 tendon for FPL
perforating wounds of the thumb and pinky can affect the carpal tunnel, why?
infection
synovial sheaths of each are continuous with synovial sheath of carpal tunnel
what nerves do not pass through the carpal tunnel?
Ulnar nerve
Palmar cutaneous Nerve - if sensation of the palmar aspect of the hand is affected then the problem is located higher in the median nerve/forearm
what is the anatomical snuff box?
dorsal aspect of hand laterally
EPL (medially)
EPB
APL (laterally)
- can palpate scaphoid bone in this area
- superficial branch of Radial N. passes through it
- Radial Artery passes through it
what is De Quervain syndrome?
tenosynovitis of the sheath or tunnel that surrounds two tendons that control movement of the thumb:
EPB
APL
(both run side by side)
overuse injuries/repetitive movements of the thumb are a contributing factor
what is the Tunnel of Guyon?
ulnar A. and N. sandwiched between 2 layers of flexor retinaculum
not part of carpal tunnel
