Glute/Hip Flashcards
Gluteus Maximus
O: behind post. gluteal line of ilium, post. sacrum, coccyx, and sacrotuberous lig.
I: gluteal tuberosity of femur
A: *hip extension, lateral rot. of hip, stabilization of hip and knees
N: inferior gluteal nerve (L5-S2)
Gluteus Medius
O: lateral surface of hip bone
I: lat. surface of greater trochanter of femur
A: *hip abduction, medial rot and hip stabilization
*trandelenburg - weak glut med is on standing leg?
N: superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
Gluteus Minimus
O: lat. surface of ilium
I: ant. surface of greater trochanter
A: abduction assist, medial rot of hip, stabilization of hip, flexion of hip (b/c of ant. insertion on gr. troch.)
N: Superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
Tensor Fascia Lata (TFL)
O: ASIS, iliac tubercle
I: lateral tibial condyle (through IT band)
A: hip abduction, medial rot of hip, lateral stability of knee joint,
N: superior gluteal nerve (L4-S1)
Draw diagram/code for sacral plexus
SIPPS 4 - sup. glut 5 5 - inf. glut 1 1 1 - post. cutaneous N. of thigh 2 2 2 - pudendal 3 3 3 - sciatic 4 4 5
Piriformis
O: ant sacrum, sacrotuberous lig.
I: through greater sciatic foramen to sup. greater trochanter
A: lat. rot of hip if hip 60°, stabilization of hip
N: nerve to piriformis (S1-S2)
List the lateral rotators of the hip
piriformis, obturator internus, gemelli, quadratus femoris*
Describe legg-calf perthes disease and it’s relation to vasculature of hip
obturator A. supplies head of femur via teres ligament (round lig. of head of femur) - prior to age 10 this is the only supply - if damaged –> avascular necrosis of femoral head
List the ligaments of the hip
- ischiofemoral lig - anterior controls hip ext., abd., and lat. rot.; post. controls med. rot.,
- pubofemoral lig
- iliofemoral lig (sup. and inf bands)
What is the prime structure of support for the hip joint on the anterior side? What about post? (ie. muscles OR ligaments)
ant. - ligaments - there are more and they are thicker
post. - muscle - they are more and they are bigger
Draw the lumbar plexus
