Halogens Flashcards
What group are Halogens?
7
What charge do Halogen ions have?
-1
Are halogens more reactive if you go up or down the group?
More reactive as you go up the group
Trends in melting and boiling point.
Melting point and boiling point decrease as you go up the group.
What can chlorine be used for?
To kill bacteria - used in water treatment (Chlorination)
Halogen hazards
Toxic, corrosive
Which two halogens are gases?
Fluorine (pale yellow gas) and chlorine (pale green gas)
Halogens react with alkali metals to form?
Salts e.g. sodium chloride
What state is iodine in under standard conditions?
Grey solid crystals
What state is bromine in under standard conditions?
Brown liquid
What colour is the vapour of iodine?
Purple
Halogens can be placed in order of reactivity what does this tell you about how they will react with each other.
A more reactive halogen will displace a less reactive halogen
What do we mean by the term diatomic?
Diatomic molecules are molecules composed of only two atoms, of the same or different chemical elements
Some elements are found as diatomic molecules
e.g. H2, N2, O2
Note All Halogens are diatomic - Cl2, I2, F2, Br2
How would you reduce the risk from hazards such as corrosive?
- Wear a lab coat, gloves and goggles
- Do not drink/eat in the laboratory
- Place chemicals away from the edge
- Always put the top back on the container
